Ermias and Daphne created Offerings, a site specific installation
for the Leper chapel inspired by their journey to Ethiopia in February
of 2005. Concepts of ritual and nomadism informed the works which
were a mixture of drawings and prcessional umbrellas which were
hung high in the roof beams. Large drawn images hung unframed on
the chapel walls and were graphite, charcoal, ink and gouache on
paper and investigated the ancient Ethiopian knots symbolic of infinity.
On the altar was a stack of small postcard sized sketches, that
were held down by a black stone. These images were reflections of
themselves in that the subject was a stack of sketches held down
by a black stone. Viewers could and did take these small drawings
away from the exhibtion.
For Ermias and Daphne there were many wonderful aspects
about creating an exhibition in the Leper Chapel. The space has
an extraordinary history, beauty, scale and atmosphere. In addition
viewers reach the work by first colecting the key from a nearby
house down the lane, then walking to the exhibition before retracing
their steps to return the key. The effort reflects the tradition
of pilgrammage, and often viewers experience a quiet solitary interlude
in the chapel before returning to their busy lives.
