Arts
meets architecture
Between 26th September and 3rd October 2009 two Fine Art Graduates
from the Cambridge School of Art, Debby Lauder and Anna Salamon
held an exhibition in the Leper Chapel. Despite very different artistic
practices, they choose to work collaboratively on a single piece
of artwork enabling the result to benefit from their differing strengths.
Responding to the building as a whole, it’s beautiful physical
interior and properties of light were addressed alongside narratives
associated with the building’s history: the transient nature
and social status of the lepers; in particular the ritual of the
‘Mass of Separation’ were evoked through the use of
earth and translucent material.
Well over 100 visitors visited the exhibition during the week and
comments placed in the artists’ visitor book included:
“ Linking the past history of this building by 21st Century
artists is powerful. Very peaceful.”
“Very atmospheric and thought-provoking use of this wonderful
building!”
“Very poetic.”
Both artists were very grateful to CPPF and the Friends of the Leper
Chapel for giving them the opportunity to exhibit in the building
and for their support throughout the project.
